However, despite her academic prowess, Solarah faced challenges navigating a world in the early 2000s, that wasn't designed with neurodiversity in mind. After attending Columbia University for two years, she ultimately decided to leave due to the constraints of an environment ill-suited for her unique needs.
This decision led her to focus on finding ways to learn what she desired to excel at on her own terms, and to then empower others facing similar struggles.
In late 2022 - through her YouTube channel, Solarah Speaks - she began sharing raw, insightful reflections on social dynamics and the struggles of living in a world that often overlooks the struggles of those who have been traumatised by way of having to constantly live and operate on societal margins.
Her channel quickly went viral, resonating with a wide audience for her honest take on family culture, and her critique of social systems that perpetuate exclusion, covert abuse structures, spiritual bullying, and the complete ignorance of those who suffer at the hands of societal traditions not designed for their betterment and empowerment.
Growing Up Privileged, Seeing Beyond
Born into privilege as the middle child of a Liberian natural resources broker, Solarah’s perspective is layered with unique experiences and insights. She grew up intermittently wealthy and African in London, but she was always acutely aware of the world’s inequities.
This perspective - combined with her own challenges as a late diagnosed autistic individual - fueled her passion for creating spaces that are genuinely inclusive and empowering. Solarah’s background allowed her to see how privilege intersects with social norms, and this awareness has deeply informed her mission to support neurodivergent and marginalized communities, and those whose voices have been silenced and shamed.
Solarah’s worldview challenges the notion that privilege equates to ease; instead, she recognizes that every layer of privilege brings unique social expectations and accompanying hidden traumas that run invisible because of society's obsession with affluence as a ticket to happiness.
